English

Welcome to the English/Drama Department at Mosman High School . The outcomes we aim to achieve in our Department are:

  1. a love and appreciation of the English language in all its different contexts and text types
  2. a development in each student of self-esteem, creativity and self-awareness through English and Drama studies
  3. an ability to use the English language accurately and diversely to enable students to participate fully in the 21 st Century
  4. an ability to look at the English language both critically and analytically.

Our courses emphasise the major strands of the new English syllabuses:

  • Writing
  • Reading
  • Speaking
  • Listening
  • Viewing
  • Representing

There is a strong emphasis in our programs on Literature, both traditional and contemporary, as well as on the mass media, with studies in film, television, radio and newspapers.

Our philosophy of teaching is to convey liberal values encouraging a diversity of opinion in an atmosphere of respect and tolerance, recognising the diversity of Australian culture.

Other Programs

In Year 7 we have developed a special program for gifted and talented students across all curriculums. Entry to the class is by examination, usually in Year 6 when students are choosing their high school. The program continues throughout the Junior School with extension work and increased opportunity to extend themselves academically. For details telephone the school office on 9968 1006.

In Year 7 we also run a wide reading and study skills program throughout all English classes, encouraging students to increase their reading and comprehension skills. This program is integrated into English studies and has been developed by our teacher-librarian.

We also provide special support teaching for students from a Non-English Speaking Background (NESB) through our ESL teachers and for students with learning difficulties through our Support Teacher Learning Difficulties (STLD).
