Social Science

The subjects taught by the Social Science Faculty at Mosman High School introduce students to their environment, encompassing both the Biophysical (or Natural) environment, the Built (Human) environment and the Financial environment. They offer a balance in school curriculum; a contrast to a physical sciences-oriented curriculum and a curriculum that emphasises the arts.

Courses

The faculty offers courses in Geography in Stage 4 (Years 7 & 8) and Geography and Commerce in Stage 5 (Years 9 & 10).

Courses in Business Studies, Economics and Geography are available for study for the Higher School Certificate. These courses are all Category A courses for University Admission Index (UAI) calculation purposes.

Education for Life

Courses offered by Social Science have wide application throughout life. Students gain skills and strategies, which will equip them as functioning members of a rapidly changing, multicultural society.

Academic rigor is a feature of the teaching in the Social Sciences. Geography is a compulsory component of the Junior school curriculum. However, all students are encouraged to enrol in and undertake other Social Science subjects in both the Junior and Senior schools. All ability levels are catered for. Each student is encouraged and supported to reach her or his potential, irrespective of their abilities.

Teachers in this faculty teach a wide range of subjects. This provides students with a wide range of interpretations of their environment and a wide diversity of views that will encourage students to become well rounded future citizens who will critically appraise society's values and challenge their own beliefs and values.
